Traditional Art from India at the Peabody Essex Museum

Salem, Massachusetts. The installation of works from the Peabody Essex Museum's collection of Indian art dating from the 1800's to the present is being exhibited in the Traditional Indian Art Gallery at Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition, Of Gods and Mortals, Traditional Art from India, started on July 15, 2006 and will be on view till March 1, 2012.

The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) tripled its existing gallery space for traditional art of India and this expanded gallery which is named the Prashant H. Fadia Foundation and Deshpande Foundation Gallery, is one of the first South Asian galleries in an American art museum named by members of the Indian-American community. Of Gods and Mortals, Traditional Art from India, the exhibition inaugurating the Prashant-Deshpande gallery, includes more than 50 works of artpaintings, sculpture, jewellery, furniture, and textiles illuminate the central role of visual arts in Indian life and culture. The show focuses on the museum's traditional Indian art collection, including portraits, rare embroideries, and South Indian devotional images.

Of Gods and Mortals, Traditional Art from India provides a unique opportunity for the public to see a broad spectrum of traditional art of India.
