‘Erotica': Sunil Das

Ganges Art Gallery, 28 Feb to 22 March

The veteran painter Sunil Das has now extended his creativity towards sculpture. 'Erotica' is a collection of his erotic sculptures where he, being inspired by Greek myth of Zeus and Leda, created bronze sculptures containing the theme of bestiality conceptualizing it within 'contemporary notions of power, sexuality and gender.'

‘Image and Symbol': Painters' & Sculptors' Perceptions

Aakriti Art Gallery, 10 to 24 April

The intrinsic relation and duality between the creation of image and symbol in figurative paintings and sculptures of the contemporary artists of Bengal was displayed from various angles in the two distinctly different exhibitions held at painting and sculpture gallery of Aakriti. 21 painters and 18 sculptors participated.

The painters were: Kartick Chandra Pyne, Sanat Kar, Suhas Roy, Ganesh Pyne, Jogen Chowdhury, Sunil Das, Kanchan Dasgupta, Asit Mandal, Aditya Basak, Monoj Mitra,

Manoj Dutta, Sekhar Roy, Jaya Ganguly, Subrata Gangopadhyay, Chhatrapati Dutta, Prasenjit Sengupta, Bratin Khan, Sagar Bhowmick, Sourav Jana, Rajesh Deb and Priyanka Lahiri.

The sculptors were: Uma Siddhanta, Sankar Ghosh, Niranjan Pradhan, Manik Talukdar, Tarak Garai, Asim Basu, Sunil Kumar Das, Tapas Sarkar, Bimal Kundu, Sunanda Das, Tapan Kumar Das, Chandan Das, Sanatan Dinda, Sanjay Kumar Das, Subrata Biswas, Chandan Bhandari, Barun Pramanik and Nantu Behari Das.

‘The Way We Are': Group Show Curated by Oindrila Maity Surai

Mon Art Gallery. 24 March to 7 April

Featuring paintings, installation and video by the nine artists from different parts of the country like Arun Kumar HG, Baiju Parthan, Bhagyanath G, Chhatrapati Dutta, Gigi Scaria, Josh PS, Saikat Surai, Sunil Padwal and Vinayak Bhattacharya the show explored the present condition of our living and endeavored 'to trace how a nation incarnates its history by forging its identity; wedding the past to the present'.

'Fiat Lux' (Let There Be Light)

Birla Academy. 6 to 11 April.

Three artists presented their works, drawings, paintings and installation, all in black and white mostly featuring violence and turmoil within the existence. Sourav Jana showed his expressionist drawings, Sourav Chatterjee his paintings, Annabel Schenck showed her wood cut prints and installation with the images of her childhood.

‘The Bone Connection': Ceramics Sculptures of Prasun Ghosh

Gandhara Art Gallery 10 to 22 April

Prasun Ghosh constructed in ceramics enlarging and distorting the skeletal features of human being to highlight the tragic void within existence.

'The Metaphor and Beyond'

Four Artists from Chennai. Gallery 88. Till April 10.

Four renowned artists from Chennai, C. Douglas, P. Gopinath, K. Muralidharan and S. Nandgopal were presented with the paintings of the first three and sculpture of Nandgopal showing how they endeavoured to build up an identity based on South Indian tradition.

'Within the Grid' : Solo Show of Avijit Mukherjee

Ganges Art Gallery. 7 to 30 April

The show comprised of a number of sets of small drawings featuring intimate presence of animate and inanimate objects to highlight 'not simply the modest drama of still life, but rather psychological vistas rich in artistic play loaded with history, symbolism and archetypes'.

Lalit Mohan Sen

Ramkrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park. 20 March to 20 April.

Lalit Mohan Sen (1898 – 1954) was an artist from Bengal who made important contribution in early modernity of Bengal art during the first half of twentieth century. Trained in academic naturalist style his works, paintings, graphic prints, murals and sculptures displayed an amalgamation of academic and indigenous forms. The exhibition showcased about 100 works of this artist who is comparatively less known to the present generation.

'Music From An Unknown Source'

German Artist Sigmar Polke at CIMA 16 April to 8 May.

40 paintings in gauche done in 1996 by the renowned German artist Sigmar Polke (born 1941), an exponent of neo-expressionist / neo-abstractionist trend of painting in post-1970s Europe, was showcased at CIMA.

Open Window

At Academy of Fine Arts (North Gallery) 21 to 27 April

'Open Window' is an artists' group based in Kolkata. Their group show was held featuring paintings and sculptures of Amitava Dhar, Dipali Bhattacharya, Diptish Ghosh Dastidar, Gopinath Roy, Hiran Mitra, Janak Jhankar Narzary, K. Muralidharan, Prasenjit Sengupta, Pradip Rakshit, Prabhat Basu, Prabir Gupta, Samir Aich, Sudeshna Haldar, Sunil De and Tapas Konar.
