Bako exists. Imagine
Chemould Prescott Road- Contemporary Art Gallery, Mumbai

Chemould Prescott Road presented Bako Exists. Imagine which started on September 10 and will continue till October 6. The show is a text based work which consists of twelve paintings and an installation with nine wooden cabinets. All his works are based on a fiction written in Gujarati by a contemporary Gujarati poet Labhshanker Thaker. It is a kind of fantasy, which allows and invokes childhood memories. The fiction is about Bako, a young boy who meets Bapu - Mahatma Gandhi, in his sleep. In fact, they both meet each other in their sleep and talk. There is no barrier of age between the old man and the young boy, Bako.

n the twelve blackboard paintings along with the cabinet installation, autobiographical references slowly blend  to form a larger creative expedition. The viewer no more remains an outsider but subconsciously becomes a passive character involved along with Bako and Bapu.



The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City by the Singh Twins

Art Alive Gallery & the Taj Mahal Hotel presents The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City by The Singh Twins featuring an exhibition of selected Collectors (Edition Giclees) and new body of digital mixed media original artworks by The Singh Twins which explores the artists' creative connection with Liverpool where they have mostly lived. The diverse themes represented are from politics to pop-culture, multi-cultural history and society. The exhibition also showcases their first animation (the award-winning The Making of Liverpool) which brings alive, one of the displayed works. The exhibition is accompanied by the launch of the artists' new publication The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City, and of their DVD (titled, Art in Motion: the Making of Liverpool).

The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City by The Singh Twins is inspired by the Twins' personal pride in and creative relationship with their home city.

The London-born artists have effectively personalized the language of Indian and Persian miniature painting depicting the complex urban and domestic landscapes of the contemporary world.

The books Twin Perspectives and Worlds A-Part are published with their work. Recently, a new book, The Making of Liverpool: Portraits of a City, was released in UK and is due to have its US launch in November.

In an online group exhibition which starts from October 16 and continues till October 31, 2011 an assortment of styles and themes can be viewed as Suhas Roy, Arpita Basu, Sukanta Das, Arunima Sanyal, Subrata Paul and others present their canvases and sculptures.

Again, in an online group exhibition which starts from October 16 and continues till October 31, 2011 Rajani Dhanewar will be the featured artist. Her lush imagery is hued with perfection, and saturated with liveliness, pertaining to the soft, yet powerful palette the artist dips her brush into.

Aakriti Art Gallery will showcase Zany and Visionary Debian Delights, new works of Rajesh Deb from October 13. The show will be on till October 29.

Rajesh Deb's diagrams are complex and somewhat look impenetrable that may collapse in its own weight. The painted spaces are zany and visionary as if he is possessed with ideas and just wants to get them drawn. Deb loves tangents, starkness incompletion and reversal that intrigue. He invents thoughts, turns it inside out, takes unexpected turns and juxtaposes different ideas in order to create new perceptions of the world. He layers information the way other artists layer materials. He takes us on an amazing journey that is lucid if not brilliant keeping in mind that the key to any successful conceptually based art is to be able to ingrain thought in material and these works in this exhibition are towards that.  Otherwise everything's just a dream.

Devotion-Invocation: a group exhibition

Art Positive will present Devotion-Invocation, its sixth annual show at Art Positive, New Delhi from October 13 till November 5, 2011. Devotion-Invocation will be a group exhibition by 40 eminent artists exploring the theme of devotion in a contemporary context, around concepts ranging from bhakti and loyalty to dedication and commitment. Curated by Sushma Bahl, the exhibition will present varied oeuvres, forms and media in a range of contemporary artworks that bring together faith, fact and fantasy.

The exhibition will showcase 75 fresh works of participating artists like Akhilesh, Akkitham Narayanan, Arijoy Bhattacharya, Arunkumar HG, Bratin Khan, Chhotu Lal, Dharmendra Rathore, Dileep Kumar Sharma, Enas M J, Gagan Vij, Gopal Swami Khetanchi, Jayasri Burman, Kazi Nasir, Manish Pushkale, Manu Parekh, NS Rana, Paramjit Singh, Prithvi Soni, Puja Bahri, Radhakrishnan K.S, Sanatan Dinda, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Satish Gupta, Seema Kohli, Shekhar Roy, Shail Choyal, Shipra Bhattacharya, Shobha Broota, Shuvaprasanna, Sidharth, Subodh Kerkar, Subrata Saha, Sudip Roy, Suhas Roy, Suman Roy, Suneel Mamadapur, Suresh Kumar Muthukulam, Venkat Bothsa, Vinay Sharma, Vrindavan Solanki and V. Viswanadhan.

The artists not only explore the theme in its divine, iconic and religious context, but also in its philosophical and rational interpretations. The displayed paintings, sculptures and installations meander around one's devotion to an idea or principle or cause. Given the freedom to interpret the concept in any which way, some of the artists have also dared to examine it in a somewhat negative turn where devotion turns into obsession or blind love. The collective artworks in Devotion- Invocation makes a fairly varied representation of contemporary art scene reflective of its vibrancy and divergent perspectives.

Prana- The Life Within by Nobina Gupta

Galerie Kashya Hildebrand, Zurich will present Prana- The Life Within, the works of Nobina Gupta from October 20 to December 3, 2011.

Born in 1972 in Jabalpur, India, Nobina lives and works in Kolkata. Looking at her recent body of work, what becomes clear is its relationship, to the abstract composition of emotion, as well as to contemporary visual culture.

The natural energy of the universe, the 'Prana' or 'Chi', the rhythmic flow of life, freedom of evolution, and spontaneity of growth within the vast expanse of organic world has always been Nobina Gupta's primal mode of inspiration. As a result of throwing sustainability to the winds, pollution and exploitation of natural resources is evident, which is causing effects like environmental degradation and global warming. These are throwing up questions galore about the ongoing paradigm of development.

Hence, only by realizing and empathizing with our surrounding environment, one can attempt to maintain a balance and retain the natural flow of life 'Prana'.

Her works give the message that this is the time to become aware of the fact that there is still opportunity to re-establish the missing link that completes the full circle.
