Image and Symbol: Sculptors' Perceptions

Group Show

10th to 24th April
Aakriti Art Gallery, Sculpture Wing

This exhibition displays works of eighteen sculptors coming to their own between 1960-s and the first decade of twenty-first century. The works show the evolution of forms and how the artists deal with image-symbol relationship commenting on some societal reality through narrative or non-narrative form. The participating artists are Asim Basu, Barun Pramanik, Bimal Kundu, Chandan Bhandary, Chandan Das, Manik Talukdar, Nantu Behari Das, Niranjan Pradhan, Sanatan Dinda, Sankar Ghosh, Sanjay Kumar Das, Subrata Biswas, Sunil Kr Das, Sunanda Das, Tapan Kumar Das, Tapas Sarkar, Tarak Garai and Uma Siddhanta. This exhibition will be on view at the sculpture wing of Aakriti Art Gallery.

The sculptors who have arrived at their own form have devised new paradigm of expression through transformation of the previous models taking into account the post-modern and globalised reality. The relation between their image and symbol has been more complex through introduction of kitsch and various pop metaphors. Their range of mediums and ways of image construction and expression has changed to a great extent in comparison to the works of the previous generations. Process of local-global synthesis has also been changed to a considerable extent.

The exhibition thus traces the evolution of contemporary sculptural forms.
