Paris Jewels, Paris

June 6

191 lots were put at Christie's Paris Jewels for sale, out of which 152 lots were sold. The sale realised €3,100,088 selling 80% by lots and 84% by value. The highest price went to lot 192, Bague Solitaire Diamant De Couleur, a fancy yellow circular-cut diamond ring which fetched €499,000. Its estimated price was €350,000 – €400,000. The next high priced lot was 165, Collier Art Déco, cristal de roche et diamants, par Cartier. Its estimated price was €100,000 – €150,000 while it was sold for €331,000.

Other highlights of the sale were lot 186 Bague Diamants, Ornée d'un diamant rond taille brillant pesant 7.74 carats épaulé de chaque côté d'un diamant baguette, monture en platine, poinçon français, poids brut: 6.25 gr, which was sold for €181,000; lot 148, Collier Diamants which was sild for €145,000; lot 149, Broche Perle Fine et Diamants which was sold for €121,000 and others.


South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, London, King Street

June 11

112 lots from South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art were put on sale at Christie's London out of which 86 lots were sold for £4,102,938.The sale realised £4,102,938 and was 77% sold by value and 77% sold by lot.

The highest price went to lot 24, Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009), Untitled (Mahishasura), signed and dated 'Tyeb 96' (upper left); further signed and dated 'Tyeb 96' (on the reverse), acrylic on canvas, 59 7/8 x 48 in. (152.1 x 120 cm.), painted in 1996. Its estimated price was £1,200,000 - £1,800,000. It was sold for £1,385,250. The next high price went to lot 44, S. H Raza (B. 1922), Clocher du Village, signed and dated 'Raza '58' (lower right); oil on canvas, 57 3/8 x 44 5/8 in. (145.7 x 113.3 cm.), painted in 1958. It was sold for £481,250. Other highlights included M.F Husain, A. Ramachandran, Ram Kumar, Manjit Bawa, Somnath Hore, Bikash Bhattacharya, Ganesh Pyne, Jogen Chowdhury and others.



Valuable Printed Books and Manuscripts, London, King Street

June 13

Christie's had presented 219 lots of valuable printed books and manuscripts of which 176 were sold. Total sale including buyer's premium was 3,175,987 (GBP) and was 80% sold by lot and 85% by value.

The highest price went to lot 36, BACH, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750), Autograph Letters and Manuscripts. Its estimated price was 120,000 - 160,000 (GBP) while it was sold for 337,250 (GBP). The next high priced item was lot 12, Antiphonal of Elisabeth Von Gemmingen, In Latin, Illuminated Manuscript Choirbook on Vellum. It was sold for 289,250 (GBP).

Other highlights of the sale included lot 11 Book of Hours, use of Rouen, in Latin and French, Illuminated Manuscript on Vellum [Rouen, c.1485] sold for 121,250(GBP); lot 23 Richard III (1452-1485), king of England, Letter signed (with his monogram, 'R.R.') to the justices of the peace in Warwickshire, Westminster, 22 February n.y. [1484 or 1485]; lot 106, Dickens, Charles. The Personal History of David Copperfield. London: Bradbury & Evans which was sold for 61,250 (GBP).

Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, London, New Bond Street

June 7

72 lots were put under the hammer including various art works of Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan artists. The highest price went to lot 20, oil on canvas by Jehangir Sabavala, titled Vespers I which was sold for £253,250 inc. premium. The next high price lot was 28, Maqbool Fida Husain's The Blue Lady. It was sold for £97,250 inc. premium. Other highlights included

Untitled (Landscape) by FN Souza which was sold for £67,250 inc. premium and Untitled (Goat) by Manjit Bawa, which was sold for £67,250 inc. premium. Various other eminent featured artists were Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore, Jamini Roy, Abdur Rahman Chughtai, Ustad Allah Bux, B. Prabha, Sadequain, Krishen Khanna, Gulam Rasool Santosh, Ismail Gulgee, George Keyt, Jamil Naqsh, Jogen Chowdhury, Anwar Jalal Shemza and others.

Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art including Indian Miniature Paintings, London

June 8

Sotheby's had put up 91 lots of modern and contemporary south Asian art including Indian miniature paintings for auction. 37 lots were sold for a total of 546,800 GBP. The highest price went to lot 43, Goan Landscape by FN Souza which was sold for 68,450 GBP. The next high price item was lot 35, an untitled work by Ram Kumar, which was sold for 55,250 GBP. Other highlights included Gaganendranath Tagore, Hemendranath Mazumdar, Horace Van Ruith, Sir Charles D'Oyly, A Balasubramanyan, K H Ara, Jyoti Bhatt, S H Raza, Jamini Roy, Sailoz Mookherjea, Gopal Ghosh, Avinash Chandra and others.


Saffronart
Summer Art Auction 2012 Auction, Mumbai

June 20

The annual Saffronart Summer Art Auction achieved a total of Rs. 16.7 crore (USD 3.1 million), with 86% of the 70 lots on offer selling. The two-day auction of modern and contemporary Indian art was marked by top prices for several modernists. Bidding on S.H. Raza's Encountre (1985) towards the close of the auction saw it surpass its estimate of Rs. 2 to 2.5 crore (USD 370,375 - 462,965), to eventually sell for an unprecedented Rs. 3.15 crores (USD 585,000). Other highlights included works by leading artists such as Badri Narayan, Ganesh Pyne, B. Prabha, T. Vaikuntam, Subodh Gupta and Bharti Kher. Badri Narayan's Ganesh received a remarkable Rs. 5.99 lakh (USD 11,100), more than six times its estimate (Rs. 80,000  1, 00,000 | USD 1,485  1,855). Several lots crossed the Rs. 1 crore mark, including S.H. Raza's Encountre (1985) and Germination closing at Rs. 3.15 crore (USD 585,000) and Rs. 1.82 crore (USD 336,898) respectively, V.S. Gaitonde's Untitled at Rs. 2.85 crore (USD 527,500), Subodh Gupta's Untitled at Rs. 1.17 crore (USD 216,000) and M.F. Husain's Untitled at Rs 1.02 crore (USD 189,780).

Creative India Series 4 - (Goa, Cholamandalam, South India)

June 21

Of the 120 lots put up for auction 70 lots (58.33 per cent ) were sold acquiring a total sales of Rs 65,788,800 with an average lot price of Rs 938,697. The highest bid of Rs 6,000,000 went to lot 36, F N Souza, Nude, oil on canvas followed by a lot 57, Fantasy Series by K Ramanujam valued at Rs 4,800,000. Other highlights included K.C.S. Paniker, J. Sultan Ali, D.P. Roy Chowdhury and others.

The Exceptional Sale 2012, London, King Street

July 5

The sale presents three centuries of decorative arts, from the first quarter of the 16th century to the first quarter of the 19th century. Featuring the finest examples of furniture, silver, sculpture, clocks and porcelain  including recent discoveries and previously unknown examples - the sale exemplifies the very best of European decorative arts; it is expected to realise a total in excess of £13 million. 48 lots will be put for auction. Some of the highlights include The Leinster service a George II silver dinner-service, Mark of George Wickes, London, 1745-1756, its estimated price is £1,500,000 - £2,000,000, A carved marble group representing Charity

By Jan Van Delen (D. 1703), Circa 1673-1678. The seated female figure of Charity with a boy holding a bunch of grapes in her lap, a little girl standing beside her; on an integrally carved plinth and set into a later rectangular marble base; the reverse unfinished; repairs and restorations, its estimated price is £150,000 - £200,000.

 


Jewellery, London, South Kensington

July 18

298 lots will be put up for sale including jewellery, watches, clocks and other items. Highest priced item is expected to be lot 250, a diamond single stone ring with an estimated price of £12,000 - £15,000. The rectangular-cut diamond, weighing approximately 3.52 carats, to baguette-cut diamond two stone shoulders, finger size S. The next high priced item is lot 226, a diamond single stone ring, the brilliant-cut diamond in a raised six-claw mount, finger size M. Its estimated price is £10,000 - £15,000.

Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale, London

July 5

219 lots will be put on sale at the Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale. The highest price is expected to be lot 194, John Wootton, A Huntsman on a Grey Hunter with Hounds in a Landscape, signed lower right: J Wootton, oil on canvas, 127 by 101.5 cm; 50 by 40 inches, with an estimated price of 150,000 - 250,000 GBP; the next high priced lot is expected to be lot 179, Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto, Venice, The Entrance to the Grand Canal Looking East, along with lot 185, attributed to Dirck Dircksz. van Santvoort, Portrait of a Child, aged 2¼, full-length standing in an interior, holding a parrot and lot 291, Thomas Gainsborough, R.A., Portrait of Mrs. Richards., all estimated between 80,000 - 120,000 GBP.
