259 lots were put on sale from Old Master Paintings. The highest price went to lot 144w, Michele Antonio Rapous (Piedmont 1733-1819), Roses, tulips, carnations and other flowers in a stone vase, beside another vase in a landscape; Poppies, convolvulus, roses and other flowers in a stone vase beside grapes and peaches amid carved stonework in a landscape, a pair, oil on canvas, 92 x 114cm (36 1/4 x 44 7/8in).(2). It was sold for £22,500 (inclusive of buyer's premium).

Impressionist & Modern Art Works on Paper
Rockefeller Plaza, New York

May 2

Christie's 138 lots of Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper sales achieved $33,655,375, with strong sell-through rates of 83% by lot and 88% by value. The top lot of the combined sales was lot 461, Ernst Barlach's, Weinende Frau, a unique carved and stained wood figure executed in 1923, which sold for $938,500 a new world auction record for the artist. Sale total including buyer's premium was $23,508,250.

Masterpieces of African Art from the Collection of the Late Werner Muensterberger, New York

May 11

7 items (lots 58 - 65) from The Masterpieces of African Art from the Collection of the Late Werner Muensterberger were offered for sale at the Sotheby's New York. The highest price went to lot 62, Luluwa Helmet Mask, Democratic Republic of the Congo, height: 13 3/4 in (34.9 cm). Its estimated price was 1,500,000 - 2,500,000 USD. It was sold for 2,546,500 USD.

Paris Jewels, Paris

June 6

192 lots of Paris jewellery will be put on for auction at the Christie's. The highest price is expected to be lot 192, Bague Solitaire Diamant De Couleur, a coloured diamond and platinum single-stone ring. Its estimated price is €350,000 -  €400,000. The next high price is expected to be lot 190, Bague Solitaire Diamant, a diamond, platinum and gold single-stone ring with an estimated price of  €200,000 -  €300,000.


South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art, London, King Street

June 11

112 lots from South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art will be put on sale at Christie's London. The highest price is expected to be lot 24, Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009), Untitled (Mahishasura), signed and dated 'Tyeb 96' (upper left); further signed and dated 'Tyeb 96' (on the reverse), acrylic on canvas, 59 7/8 x 48 in. (152.1 x 120 cm.), painted in 1996. Its estimated price is £1,200,000 - £1,800,000. Other highlights include S.H. Raza, M.F Husain, A. Ramachandran, Ram Kumar, Manjit Bawa, Somnath Hore, Bikash Bhattacharya, Ganesh Pyne, Jogen Chowdhury and others.


Valuable Printed Books and Manuscripts, London, King Street

Christie's will be presenting 220 lots of valuable printed books and manuscripts. The highest price is expected to be lot 12, Antiphonal of Elisabeth Von Gemmingen, In Latin, Illuminated Manuscript Choirbook on Vellum, [Speyer, c.1504], 555 x 370mm. 238 folios: 17, 2-288, 294, 302, 318, 321, gatherings numbered with roman numerals, eight lines of music of square notation on a four-line stave of red above text in black ink in a gothic bookhand, fourteen large historiated initials, two large foliate initials, all with marginal sprays or borders with flower and leaf sprays and the coats of arms of the von Gemmingen and von Neuenstein families, Wide Border Miniature, large calligraphic initials throughout with penwork flourishing in black and red, many incorporating heads or beasts.Mid-16th-century panelled pigskin ruled and rolled in blind with figured metal corner-pieces and central bosses.Its expected price is £150,000 - £200,000. Another highlight of the exhibition is lot 106, Dickens, Charles. The Personal History of David Copperfield. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. 8° (214 x 134 mm). Engraved frontispiece, title and 38 plates after Hablot K. Browne ['Phiz']. Contemporary dark green roan, sides panelled in blind, spine titled in gilt, raised bands ruled in gilt, gilt edges, yellow coated endpapers (gilding on spine mostly worn off, extremities rubbed, front hinge repaired). Its estimated price is £30,000 - £50,000.

Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art including Indian Miniature Paintings, London

June 8

Sotheby's will put up 91 lots of modern and contemporary south Asian art including Indian miniature paintings for auction. The highlights for the auction are lot 64, M F Husain, Islam and lot 59, S H Raza, La Forge. Both the lots are estimated between 300, 000- 400, 000 GBP. The other highlights include Francis Newton Souza, A rare complete illustrated and illuminated Ramayana Manuscript, Jitish Kallat, Ram Kumar, Horace Van Ruith, Sadequain and others.

Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art, London, New Bond Street

June 7

72 lots will be put under the hammer including various art works of Indian, Pakistani and Sri Lankan artists. The highlight of the sale is Lot 30*AR, Still Life with Bread and Fish, oil on canvas, 1962, FN Souza, and lot 20, oil on canvas by Jehangir Sabavala, titled Vespers I. Both lots being estimated at 160 - 240, 000 USD. MF Husain's The Blue Lady closely follows at an estimate of 110- 150,000 USD.

Carpets, Rugs & Tapestries

Bid & Hammer's auction of carpets, rugs and tapestries comprises 120 lots with estimates starting from 280 USD and going up to 22,500 USD. Majority of the lots are over 100 years old and on offer are carpets, rugs, kilims, runners, tapestries and fragments from the most distinguished weaving regions of the world. The total value of lots estimates between 281,500  360,700 USD.

The collection includes tribal carpets from many weaving regions outside India - the Caucasian mountains; the Persian Zagros mountains area; the Kurdish enclaves of Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria; the high and middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco; and  Central Asian republics such as Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Most of the carpets date to the nineteenth century. The colours are generally attributable to natural dyes in the older examples. The condition of the carpets varies from some seemingly untouched pristine antiques to those that have worn through usage over time..

One of the highlights is lot 95, a Kurdish Genje Runner, circa 1850, which is a very rare and well-preserved example of a long rug likely woven by the Kurdish tribes living in the Caucasian Karabagh area. This is estimated between Rs. 7, 00,000- Rs. 10, 00,000. Size: 14ft 9 in by 3 ft 10 inches.
